Overview

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is a global organization established in 1957 to promote the peaceful use of nuclear energy and to prevent its use for military purposes, including nuclear weapons. Headquartered in Vienna, Austria, the IAEA supports scientific and technical cooperation in nuclear technology, ensures nuclear safety standards, and verifies that nuclear materials are not diverted for weapons use through inspections and monitoring. It works closely with its member states and the United Nations to uphold international nuclear agreements.
