Disarmament and International Security Committee

Overview

The Disarmament and International Security Committee (DISEC), also known as the First Committee of the General Assembly, focuses on global security and disarmament issues. Its primary functions include addressing challenges in the international security regime, developing and implementing disarmament regulations, promoting cooperative arrangements and confidence-building measures, and preventing the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. DISEC works closely with the UN Disarmament Commission and the Geneva-based Conference on Disarmament. Although it cannot make binding decisions on UN members, its recommendations often form the basis for treaties and conventions, playing a crucial role in maintaining global peace and security.
